The purpose of the intercooler is to cool air that has compressed in either a turbo or supercharger. When air is compressed the temperature rises and becomes less dense. The intercooler provides denser air to the engine, thus improving the combustion by allowing more fuel to be burned. It also increases reliability because it provides a more consistent temperature of air intake to the engine, allowing the air fuel ratio of the engine to remain at a safe level.
